Bundle up and hope for unseasonably warm weather! This Saturday various restuarants are encouraging you to brave the cold while you drink your drink. Sponsored by Main Street Area Assocation and Ann Arbor getDowntown the following restaurants will be offering incentives to get out by taking your drink to the sidewalk!

(Per getDowntown) Restaurants and cafes will have outdoor seating and there will be discounts to downtown stores. Restaurants and cafes will be bringing out their sidewalk furniture, and those guests who sit outside will enjoy specials such as $2 draught beers and $1 hot drinks (tea, coffee, soda, etc.). For Downtown stores all you have to do is grab a drink, get your receipt stickered and then visit one of the following stores for your discount. These stores should have balloons outside them to let you know they are participating.

Admittedly, it isn’t NY, but we certainly have local talent turning out wearable art and attire that deserves our support. Dressed on Washington St. One day, multiple shows ranging from young adult contributors to recycled wear. My mom used that term when I was a kid as she was jamming me into one of my brother’s old coats. I’m anticipating much better things of this show. The tent is heated and Washington is blocked-off. Put on your klick’ity clacks and come discover your local designers.

Ypsi has an Orchestra???

Yup, they do and they are celebrating their 10th season! Considering this community orchestra has been around for 10 years, if you haven’t been, don’t you think it’s time? This Saturday will be your chance. Enjoy what is predicted to be a gorgeous day by heading to Riverside Park to listen to A Tribute to the Americas. Drag out your lawn chair …and I don’t have one of those handy little orgami type lawn chairs that ends up being a Lazy-Boy Lounger. I have one of those ‘bruise your chins as you walk’ type chairs. Pack a little vino in a messenger bag and go enjoy something that isn’t offered everyday in Ypsi. Live music is amazing and live music on a perfect spring day is unbeatable. To boot, it’s free! So all you families out there who cringe as the ticket guy adds up the cost for a family of five bring the neighbor kids too! Even if the symphony doesn’t register with your 4 year old who won’t sit still for one minute, you can enjoy a few moments of musical peace before someone has to run off to grab junior.

Ypsilanti – Memorial Day Parade

I’m not a big parade girl. This, of course, is my opinion and is not meant to influence others. Parades are beautiful things for all different reasons to different people ….just not my people. But parades can showcase the local bands, they give those who have a theatrical streak a chance to shine, they can celebrate the holidays or be the catalyst for a great party. Memorial Day often means an extra day off of work, a chance to drive up north for the first warmth of summer or a BBQ with friends. These are all good things.

Something else that Memorial Day stands for? The original thing it stands for? These parades and events honor the people who have given of themselves to levels I cannot fathom to protect the freedoms I take for granted and I still don’t attend any parades. How is that for selfish? This year however, I’m going to be better. I will attend a parade. I will be up north with family so the Ypsi parade will be left to someone else’s commentary, but I will be near West Branch and they have a parade every year.

So this year I promise to attend The Memorial Day Parade to honor those who serve in our current wars and conflicts, as well as, those like my father or my friend Sammy who served in past wars. I will go and show my support. I will go and learn something that I can take with me and share with others. I will smile and wave at those who walk the route and gave of their time to make the parade happen. …and I will have a good time. I don’t type that as a command I type it as a statement of fact.

I will have fun. I will talk to interesting people. I will see some kid do something cute or funny. I will flirt with a 90 year old man who grins like a 20 year old. Everyone is happy. How is that not fun? But more importantly, I will be there. My presence will add to the crowd. My cheering will increase the volume. My brain attempting to comprehend the depth of giving the service men, women and their so rarely mentioned families offer to me and everyone else in this country will make me more compassionate and hopefully …a little less selfish. Have a great Memorial Weekend and let me know the fun you had at the Ypsi parade.

A good friend and I went car hunting when I was in my early 20’s. I had just come into the full bloom of loving vintage cars. Prior to this point I had been satisfied with cars that always started, had automatic locks and I felt the addition of seat belts was a positive step for preserving humanity. No more. I drank the motor oil and slapped down $2,500 for a 1960 Galaxie.

My friend drove it home since the 3-on-the-tree transmission was not yet in my skill set. I loved that car. The stories that car had in my 3 years of ownership make me forgive and forget all of the headaches I had in my 3 years of ownership. I once again drive a car that always starts, has automatic everything and will never earn the emotion I had for that Seafoam Green monster. To satisfy my urge I’ll head to one of the earliest outdoor car shows in the area.

The Ypsilanti Show & Shine – Street Rod Car Show & Swap Meet. These cars have little in common with my old guy. These cars are pampered and primped. They can even throw flames on command! Mine threw flames, but I was on my way up north and they came out from under the hood. Two days of razzle and dazzle with a lot of rumbling thrown in will make me yearn again for that metal dash that was covered in magnets by the end of my tenure. Go, wander, learn a little automotive history and when you get back in your car appreciate that push start ignition and smile as those new seats even cool your bum on a warm summer day in Ypsilanti.
